Semi-peripheral port housings offer a great compromise between increased power and everyday drivability. By combining traditional side intake ports with peripheral ports, airflow improves dramatically at high RPM while retaining a better idle and more low-end torque compared to a full peripheral port.
The semi-peripheral port also creates the iconic "brap" sound at idle.
